This has contributed to significant economic growth, attracting over 1,500 new jobs. Our team’s efforts since 2019 have generated £14.90 in Gross Value Added (GVA) for every £1 of public funding, a remarkable return on investment that underscores its role as an economic powerhouse. The centre’s work also aligns with national priorities, such as addressing climate change and strengthening health resilience, ensuring its benefits are felt across the UK.
Strengthening Newcastle University's Role in Innovation
NICD’s success is intrinsically linked to Newcastle University’s mission of driving societal impact. By acting as a bridge between academia and industry, the centre not only boosts the university’s reputation but also creates opportunities for students, researchers, and alumni to engage with real-world challenges. The business partnerships facilitated by NICD underscore the university’s role as a key player in data-driven innovation. We have helped Newcastle University secure over £80 million in public research funding so far, amplifying the region’s research and innovation capabilities.

Looking ahead, NICD’s vision for scalable and sustainable innovation ensures its contributions will continue to shape the business landscape and regional economy. Projections indicate that the current GVA of £35.7 million (net present value, NPV) is projected to rise to £206 million in net additional GVA by end-2033, highlighting our enduring value and long-term impact on the region. Projections also show that NICD is set to play a major role in delivering an economic benefit to the North East, totaling £742 million in GVA (NPV) over the coming decade through sustainable and scalable initiatives.
